We always spend Christmas Eve at my brother in-laws with a house full of family and friends.  After a late dinner of fish and pasta, we let the kids open some small gifts and then sing happy birthday to baby Jesus.  The kids hold candles during a nice moment to celebrate the true meaning of the holiday.  Afterwards there is some impromptu caroling of Christmas classics complete with off key singing (me), incorrect lyrics and a lot of humming during the parts we are not sure of.

This sends us home in good spirits to get ready for Christmas morning.  On the ride home, we try to get the kids to relax so they can actually sleep once we get there.  While they are winding down, they will point out the window at all the houses with Christmas lights.  You get to see quite a variety from the simple to the very elaborate, but none quite like this:

I don’t know the tradition behind Christmas lights, but it’s a wonderful form of expression that always brightens the holiday season for me.  Looking at all of these individual lights working in unison is very impressive.   Just imagine each light blinking to its’ own rhythm without regard to the music or the other lights.  Our current driving situation is an organized system of roads and highways like the strands of lights, but the drivers are each doing there own thing.

How can we better coordinate our commuting patterns to reduce traffic and allow the flow of drivers and riders to move more smoothly?  Passenger Energy could create a system to share information that allows for a more cohesive whole.  This is only now becoming possible through the amazing advances in technology.  We need to utilize cell phones, texting and the internet to group riders and light the way to a better future.

Watching F1 on N95 8GB via SlingboxWhile driving, we have all seen kids watching TV screens in the back of minivans.  Some cars are now even available with satellite antennas so you can enjoy live TV.  There are also advancements in cell phone technology like the MPH from LG that enable mobile digital TV.

One of the coolest devices to come along recently is the Slingbox.  This device connects a TV source in your home to an existing internet connection.  You can then remotely view your cable or satellite programming while on the road.  So if you have an internet ready cell phone or laptop with a high speed connection, you can take your TV with you.

We have so many entertainment options available to us today.  I would much rather watch TV while someone else drives than be behind the wheel stuck in traffic.  How about you?

Enjoy the ride!

Today we have an amazing array of electronic gadgets to entertain us when away from home.  Think of how much more you could enjoy these devices if someone else was driving.

Mehdi's Creative ZenMany cell phones are now equipped with internet access so you can email and surf the web.  Text messaging has surged in popularity and definitely should not be done while driving.  Also, any driver just talking on the phone while driving can be easily distracted.

In the last few years, the popularity of mp3 players has grown dramatically with the iPod leading the way.  Each passenger could just pop on their head phones and listen to their own music.

Handheld gaming systems have also burst into our lives over the last 10 years.  Why should kids have all the fun?  There are hundreds of games available for devices like the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS to help pass time during a shared trip.

Laptop computers continue to grow in popularity.  Even without an internet connection, you could read and respond to email and then connect to the internet when you get to the office.

Another device aimed at kids, but one that would definitely be enjoyed by adults is the portable dvd player.  Wouldn’t it be nice to enjoy a movie or watch a box set of your favorite TV series while someone else drives?

And don’t forget about just plain old reading.  Grab a newspaper, magazine or book that you normally do not have time to read.  Hey if you are really up on technology, then get yourself a portable ebook reader and carry hundreds of books with you.

Let someone else drive while you enjoy the ride.
