My name is Mat Kennedy and I live in New Jersey with my wife and 3 children. I work for a small software company www.bassets.net and have been fortunate enough to work from home for the last 10 years. One day a week I need to go into our main office in North Jersey and drive 90 miles each way. On these days, I am constantly amazed at the ever increasing volume of commuter traffic. I really don’t know how people do it everyday.
Druing these weekly drives my travel time can vary from 90 minutes to as much as 3 hours. Since I only do it once a week, I have the flexibility to vary my hours and try to avoid rush hour. When I do find myself stuck in a nasty traffic jam, my mind wanders to possible solutions. One day I had a thought, what if drivers began charging for rides? We have millions of drivers with lots of unused capacity. The hard part is convincing riders that they could save money paying someone else to drive and at the same time helping the environment.
